I have always loved mythology, especially Greek, and the riddle to be discussed was the one between King Oedipus and the Sphinx. Many people will know the Sphinx as the serene looking statue in Egypt near the Pyramids, but at the time of Oedipus, the Sphinx was a fierce creature half human/half lion which guarded the city of Thebes and would kill anyone who could not answer its riddle.
One of the traditions of Christmas Day in the UK is the Queen’s speech at 3 o’clock when people are usually stuffed to the gills after Christmas dinner, but this year it was King Charles.

The police and London ambulance service (LAS) were called and after assessing her they felt she was safe to take back to her flat and put her in bed to sleep”

These are the words of the daughter of one of my patients who was diagnosed with dementia during the pandemic; and normally I would signpost them to the relevant charities and advocacy organisations like AGE U.K. and Alzheimer’s Society.
One of the TV programs I used to enjoy watching was “Through the keyhole” which involved two teams trying to guess which celebrity lived in a particular house with the expert Loyd Grossman wandering around the rooms and pointing out various features which would reflect on the life and character of the owner.
So why did I get involved?
In two words, guilt and regret, about my great aunty who is now in a nursing home in Tooting.
But the story starts like many South Asian immigrants who came to the UK in the 60s with the ubiquitous Asian corner shop, which was open all hours before the days of Getir and Deliveroo.
8.9.2022 was a date which will live on in history as it was when Queen Elizabeth the Second passed away after being the longest reigning monarch in UK history. Even though we knew this was going to happen the country’s security services and media had already prepared for this eventuality by coding it as Operation London Bridge which was put in to action whilst the national collectively grieved.
